by Gregory McBride-Bey on 02/16/19

A Certified Peer Support Specialist, also known as a Certified Peer Specialist, is a person with significant life-altering experience. This is also referred to as "lived experience", or ("Been There, Done That") These specialists support individuals with struggles pertaining to mental health, psychological trauma and substance use.

A Certified Peer Specialist is a person who is in Recovery, whether from mental health deficits, psychological difficulties, or substance abuse and who is actively working to help others to change their lives for the better. As more and more learn about the impact of peer support, opportunities and career paths for peer specialists will grow and expand. The growth of peer support has the potential to radically transform the ways we support people in the behavioral health system.

If you are interested in working as a peer support specialist, you will likely have to participate in some sort of training. Requirements vary across the states so you must determine what is required in your state or county.
